Cleantech Council delegates meet monthly to discover startups and innovation across energy and sustainability technologies and build community with colleagues from like-minded corporations committed to paving the road to a sustainable future through partnership.
The escalating adoption of electric vehicles and large-scale energy storage systems presents both a monumental challenge and a significant opportunity: the responsible management of end-of-life batteries. We’re a few years before a surge in retired batteries and electric motors, as original EV cars hit end-of-life which will be followed by retiring batteries deployed for grid storage.
The global EV battery recycling market alone is projected to be $23B in 10 years, growing 40% per year. This meeting will delve into challenges and opportunities unique to circularity for EVs and batteries.

The methods for reclaiming valuable materials are themselves at a crucial innovation juncture. Battery recycling has the potential to generate significant domestic intellectual property, foster pioneering methods, and create a substantial number of local jobs.
Unlike traditional pyrometallurgy, hydrometallurgy, direct recycling, cathode recovery, and new methods for material separation, show immense promise for energy savings and material integrity, and are a key area of startup innovation and funding.
Concurrently, the landscape is being reshaped by newer and diverse battery chemistries. While these may ease the sourcing of virgin materials by diversifying options, they also introduce complexity into recycling streams, potentially hindering the efficiency of standardized recovery processes.
This meeting is going to touch on topics such as:
- Battery Second Life strategies, their economic viability, and market applications
- Advanced battery recycling technologies (pyrometallurgy, hydrometallurgy, direct recycling)
- The evolving economics of material recovery and market dynamics for recycled content
- Circular economy for large batteries and rare earth metals
- "Design for Recycling" principles and best practices in battery manufacturing
- Logistical challenges and infrastructure development for effective battery collection, transportation, and processing
- Specific challenges and solutions for recycling batteries from stationary storage systems alongside EV units
To navigate these complexities and harness the opportunities, we invite both members and non-members to join this topic. Attendees will benefit from a series of curated introductory presentations delivered by founders of startups and scale-ups from around the world working on cutting-edge technologies and business models in the battery reuse and recycling.
