The hydrogen economy is gaining traction, with the global hydrogen generation market size valued at USD 155.38 billion in 2022 and projected to reach USD 242.71 billion by 2028, growing at a CAGR of 7.9%. This meeting will explore the cutting-edge of hydrogen technology, focusing on its role in a sustainable energy future.
As people and governments work towards reducing CO2 output and evolving our relationship with energy away from fossil fuels and towards renewable energy (RE), there is ongoing interest in “The Hydrogen Economy.”
Hydrogen is seen as a potential valuable carrier of stored energy harvested by solar, wind, thermal, or other renewable energy (RE) sources. As a storage medium, H2 is capable of solving one of RE’s most enduring problems: it cannot be relied upon, and it cannot be produced at all times of the day. When consumption is mismatched with production, we need solutions for banking energy when it is produced, and thus being able to time-shift its delivery until it is needed. By using RE to produce electricity, and with a supply of water, electrolysis can produce H2. This H2 can be stored, then later re-converted to electricity in a Hydrogen Fuel Cell. Our meeting will delve into the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats surrounding hydrogen as a viable energy storage solution.
One huge caveat is that there are significant overhead losses in upconverting electricity into Hydrogen gas. And there are losses the other way when H2 is converted back into electricity. And H2, as a gas, is a sneaky tiny molecule that is very hard to contain. If we want to compress it into a liquid, it uses a lot of energy to compress, then also to refrigerate: it requires an extremely cold (-252.8°C) tank. For this reason, energy storage in H2 really only makes sense when and where energy is very cheap. The industry is actively working on these challenges, and we will discuss the latest findings with researchers from leading institutions.
